3 Questions about the Upcoming Mobile Apocalypse

Three big questions come to mind when reading the Google announcement about mobile algorithm changes come April 21:

  1. What does this announcement actually mean for website owners?
  2. Why would Google give us a warning, since we all know new algorithms are typically sprung on us unexpectedly?
  3. What do website owners need to do to remain in the “good graces” of the search engine giant?

Google’s New Algorithm Changes to Cause Mobilegeddon

Many of are pleased that Google warned us about upcoming algorithm changes for once. BUT, the announcement is so vague, that it requires educated guesses to decipher. Here’s our translation of the Google Mobile Apocalypse announcement:

  • Google will reward websites that are mobile-friendly with higher mobile search engine rankings (PageRank) starting on April 21, 2015.
  • If your site is not mobile-friendly by April 21, your mobile rankings will be negatively impacted. You’ll get less mobile search traffic, having to rely solely on desktop traffic. This is horrible news for local businesses and online-only companies.

Why is Google Warning Site Owners this Time?

Great design is important for every website. Web design has grown in the past couple of years and it keeps evolving with new and different web design trends every year. What should we expect in 2015? Check out the infographic from Hubspot for details (bottom of page).

These 8 Web Design Trends Will Rock for Women in Business in 2015

These eight web design trends will help you build your brand as a woman in business, while increasing your brand’s presence online. All you need to do is add some flavor, and you’re good to go! Check them out:

#1 Web Design Trends in 2015: Huge and Beautiful Images

2014 was the year when high quality images made their way into web design. We expect even more in 2015. Thanks to free and unique stock image sites, there’s a variety of pictures to chose from. Humans are visual creatures and that makes this one of the biggest web design trends. And, using beautiful images that capture the eyes is something women are great at, generally speaking.

#2 Web Design Trends in 2015: Semi-Flat Design

This trend started in the end of 2013, and by the early 2014 it exploded. It later evolved into flat-ish design which combined the original flat design with real world enhancements. Google’s Material design is the prime example of this web design trend.

#3 Web Design Trends in 2015: Rich Content Experiences

Big media players have recently started to use the unique and great advantages of the web to create equally unique and amazing visual experiences. They combine these visuals together with articles and content. The trend started with Snow Fall by the New York Times back in 2012. Storytelling from a woman’s perspective has become a more intimate experience since then, and especially now in 2015 when women in business are become industry leaders by the numbers.

February 6, 2015 Happy with Your Outdated Website? 7 Signs Your Website is NOT Ready for 2015

An outdated building, lacking necessary landscape maintenance in the real world would result in a slow death for any business. Appeal is everything when it comes to attracting new customers and even retaining older ones. The same rule applies in the virtual world where many businesses fail to realize the importance of updating their websites. An outdated website will lead visitors to assuming that it’s either non-operational, or offers products and services which may have been discontinued.

7 Signs You Have an Outdated Website

Your website needs to be attractive with a smart and eye-catching layout. Doing so will boost your chances of online success and remain in competition with the rest. Take a look at the 7 signs of an outdated website and ask yourself whether your website is ready for 2015 or not.

1. Sign of an Outdated Website: Prehistoric Fonts and Graphics

Text and graphics are both vital elements in defining a website. Fortunately, these two are easily updated but should be continuously monitored to stay fresh and maintain appeal.

2015 is the year to be using a flat design, with an increased use in vector-based elements. Also trending, is a cleaner and less sophisticated design for smaller screens, such as smartphones and tablets.  The more stuffed your website, the less comprehensible it will be. Keep things simple when redesigning.

2. Sign of an Outdated Website: Ghost Content

With the passage of time, information, articles and other updates will begin to take over everything else the website stands for. It should be considered as the lifespan of content. Regular maintenance is essential to keeping everything organized and helping visitors find their way around.

Keep only that content which is still useful and plays a role in engaging visitors. Everything else should be chucked right out the window.

3. Sign of an Outdated Website: Loading is a Pain

With increasingly faster internet speed and time being of the essence, no one is looking to wait even a second longer than they have to in the online world. A 2007 study from Amazon concluded that sales went down by 1% for every 100 milliseconds delay in load-time. That is definitely food for thought.

January 29, 2015 Small Business Web Design: 7 Essential Elements for Your Home Page

As professional website maintenance managers, we’ve evaluated a lot of websites over the years. And, typically, we find the same set of site issues over and over again. To help you avoid these problems, here are seven elements to help make your home page more effective.

7 Elements to Enhance Your Home Page

  1. Where am I? – If visitors land on your site and ask that question, you have a problem. You only have a few seconds to capture their attention. So, make sure they know they’ve landed in the correct place immediately.
  2. Call-to-Action (CTA) – Conclude your home page content with a CTA. This tells your audience what you want them to do next. IE, “visit our blog”, “schedule an appointment”, “read more”, etc…
  3. Provide Solutions – Visitors come to your site for one reason… to find out what you can do for them. Make sure they know how you can solve their problems or change their lives with your solutions (products and services).
  4. Visual Appeal – Make sure your home page is pleasing to the eyes. Too much clutter, large blocks of text, few images or too many graphics can be hectic on the eyes… and the brain.
  5. Capture Emails – Always include a way to capture leads on your home page. Try offering something valuable in exchange for their first names and emails, like a free download or newsletter.
  6. Get Social – Make sure visitors know how to engage with you on social media networks. Allow them to connect with you simply, with social media buttons on your home page.
  7. Design by Personality – The web design you choose for your blog should match your brand’s personality, be it fun, technical, playful or educational.
